SustainabilityClimate Changes

The Odebrecht companies that operate in the Engineering and Construction (E&C) sector recognize the relevance of the topic of climate change when it comes to promoting environmental balance and minimizing impacts on people’s quality of life, biodiversity, the economies of countries and business in general.

The management of greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) offers opportunities for the E&C business to increase its capacity to generate increased and improved results and contribute toward a low carbon economy.

Principles:

  • The projects must assess, quantify and improve efficiency when it comes to controlling GHG emissions resulting from their activities, allowing the E&C business to fulfill its commitment of publishing its GHG emission inventory each year.
  • The quantification of the emissions must follow methodologies, standards and procedures that are internationally accepted and verifiable.
  • The assessment of the intensity of the GHG emissions and the opportunities to reduce the same must be considered when defining investments and choosing project and construction process alternatives.
  • Whenever possible, the projects must prioritize the use of renewable energy sources, as well as raw materials associated with lower GHG emissions.
  • The reduction of specific GHG emissions (per product and service unit factor) and the improvement in the net emission balance sheet must be promoted in a continuous fashion and during the entire project lifecycle - including planning, installation, demobilization and operation.
  • Effectiveness and efficiency criteria must be considered when defining programs to improve the emission balance sheet. Evaluate options for direct reduction in the project alternatives and production processes, investments in carbon capture and sequestration and support for actions designed to cut emissions due to deforestation and forest degradation.
  • Opportunities in the carbon markets must be considered to encourage reductions in the emissions during the project lifecycle, aiming to satisfy Clients and add value to the businesses and the sustainable development of the regions and communities where we operate.
  • The Organization must work together with Clients to influence practices that allow for the reduction of emissions along the entire production chain of the business.
  • The projects must promote internal training and communication actions with the interested parties, including Clients, financial institutions, communities, governments and local organizations, in terms of good GHG emission management practices.
