Odebrecht’s History in the Country:

Odebrecht entered the North American market in 1990, a natural phase for a company with global vision. The first contract in the country was earned in 1991 – an elevated automatic train system in Downtown Miami, Florida. Since then, Odebrecht United States, a subsidiary of Odebrecht International, has accumulated a portfolio of 60 projects with a value surpassing US$ 4.8 billion in contracts.

The United States Team is formed by Members of more than 23 nationalities, a group as unique as the country itself. Varied in terms of location, scale and objective, Odebrecht’s projects in the country reflect a diversity of construction services for airports, public transportation, buildings, cultural and sports centers, roads, bridges and environmental projects.

Memorable projects in Miami, where Odebrecht United States has its head office, include the American Airlines Arena, the home of the Miami Heat, the 2006 NBA champion, and the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts, a state-of-the-art scenic arts center.

Whether it is working to expand the North Terminal of the Miami International Airport, helping rebuild New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina or constructing kilometers of roads and bridges, Odebrecht United States helps structure communities throughout the country.

Strategic partnerships also led Odebrecht to the Middle East with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, as well as to Haiti, with American Airlines, for emergency repairs at the Port au Prince Airport when the country was hit by a devastating earthquake at the start of 2010 – in just three weeks, the company completed the project and the commercial airline companies could recover their services, ensuring that a good portion of the necessary assistance could reach Haiti.

Odebrecht’s operation in the United States has been an important training base for the company's engineering professionals, primarily in the area of airport construction. Odebrecht’s Members who took part in the Miami International Airport South and North Terminal Programs are now helping build airports worldwide. Since 1990, the professionals who have passed through the company’s head office in the United States continued forward, taking the North American know-how to projects in countries such as Peru, Panama, Venezuela, Libya, Angola, Mozambique, Djibouti, Guinea, United Arab Emirates, Liberia and Brazil itself.

Ação Social

In addition to contributing to the economic development of the United States, as well as the mobility and leisure of North American citizens through its construction projects, Odebrecht International is also focused on other ways of benefitting those communities in which it is present.

In partnership with the Louisiana Children’s Museum, the company has supported the installation of an Early Learning Village (ELV), an informal school in the New Orleans City Park. At the institution, children up to eight years old will participate in programs designed to support literacy and improve reading and writing skills together with their parents.

Odebrecht International and its Members have constantly collaborated with different initiatives in the area of Education, whether by donating computers to schools or sponsoring school tutoring and poetry study programs. By participating in commemorative events, such as Earth Day and Career Day, the Organization’s volunteers experience the routine of these institutions, increasing their involvement with the students and the community.

The company also undertakes social actions that benefit low income regions – directly affected by Hurricane Katrina in 2005 – and daycares designed for needy children or victims of domestic violence. Two initiatives have reinforced this role for the past 12 years: the Turkey Drive, by distributing the traditional turkeys on Thanksgiving Day, and the Toy Drive, responsible for the donation of toys at Christmas.

Other actions include support for The Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA) and the small entrepreneur training program at the North Terminal Educational Institute.

Such training took place during the period of expansion of the Miami International Airport North Terminal and led to the sub-contracting of small local construction companies formed by Black, Latin and female workers.
Florida’s Miami-Dade County and the city of New Orleans are currently the base of Odebrecht’s social investments in the United States.
