Odebrecht’s History in the Country:

Peru represented the point of departure for the international expansion of Construtora Norberto Odebrecht. Present in the country since 1979, the company’s first construction project in the region was the Charcani V Hydroelectric Power Plant in Arequipa, situated inside the Misti Volcano. The hydroelectric power plant took eight years to be completed and it remains one of the most modern in Peru until today.

Another emblematic project completed by the company was the Chavimochic irrigation project, including the construction of 277 kilometers of channels in the region of La Libertad, which is dominated by an arid climate.

In 2008, the company won the contracts to build the Sisa-Cuñumbuque Highway and
Callao Port container terminal, the same year in which it completed the Iquitos Potable Water System.

In 2010, it finalized the Bayóvar–Sechura Project in Piura for the company Vale, one of the most important developments for the exploration of phosphates in South America.

In all, Odebrecht has already completed more than 50 projects in the country. It is currently completing 10 different construction projects, which include: Olmos Transfer Project, La Bocana Project, Lima Electric Train, Chaglla Hydroelectric Power Plant and the North and South Inter-Oceanic highways. This last one will connect Iñapari, at the border between Peru and Brazil, to the Ilo, Matarani and San Juan de Marcona Ports.

The Northern Inter-Oceanic and Southern Inter-Oceanic Highways are part of the Initiative Toward South American Regional Infrastructure Integration (IIRSA) launched in 2000 in Brasília. The main objective of the project is to integrate South America. In addition to the Northern IIRSA and Southern IIRSA in Peru, Odebrecht is also part of a project that includes the opening of a road in neighboring Bolivia. The common purpose of the three initiatives is to connect the Atlantic and Pacific oceans.

The company is constructing the Bayóvar–Sechura Project in Piura for the company Vale, one of the most important developments for the exploration of phosphates in South America.

The port will have a cargo platform measuring 16 meters wide and 187 meters long. It will start its operations in July 2010 and export more than 7.9 million tons of phosphoric rock. This is the third port that Odebrecht has constructed in the country.

Ação Social

One of the main actions undertaken by Odebrecht América Latina e Angola in Peru is the Southern Inter-Oceanic Initiative (iSur), a social investment program. The goal is to guarantee that the Southern Inter-Oceanic Highway becomes an axis of integration, conservation and development for the populations that live along each side.

The actions proposed by iSur will take place along the 710 kilometers of the road that connect Iñapari to Urcos, always with aims of generating work and income opportunities. One of these is the organization of regional artists and the creation of tourism projects, aligning the sale of typical products and eco-businesses with the strengthening of local leaders.
In all, there are 16 development and conservation projects underway, involving nearly 1,800 families and eight municipalities.

The rational use of territory, respect for local culture and the incentive toward the sustainable growth of these communities are the basic principles of iSur.

Similar initiatives take place in the zone of influence of the North Inter-Oceanic Highway, the construction project that will connect Paita Pory in the Pacific, to Yurimaguas, in the Peruvian Amazon.

Odebrecht América Latina e Angola helped improve the production capacity and organization of the farmers from 12 production chains located near the construction work. The four first production chains assisted are organic coffee, cacao, heart of palm and sacha inchi (a type of peanut from the region).

Also in the regions traversed by the highway, over 2,000 students, parents and teachers take part in educational programs that encourage children’s interest in reading and improve their learning potential.

In addition to promoting playful and educational activities in the classrooms, Odebrecht América Latina e Angola maintains a bus-library, equipped with air conditioning and more than 1,500 texts for consultation. Safety on the road and environmental protection are the main topics explored in these activities.

In other strategic developments in the country, such as the Olmos Project, school-age children are also the target public of the social actions, which include music and dance workshops. For the heads of family in search of extra income, the company offers vocational workshops in the areas of cutting and sewing, bread making and the jewelry making, among others.
