Odebrecht’s History in the Country:
Between 1995 and 1996, Construtora Norberto Odebrecht helped with the recovery of the Inchope-Machipanda Highway in Mozambique. Strategic reasons promoted to company to decide immediately after to concentrate its operations on the African continent in Angola.
However, this did not mean it took its eyes off Mozambique. It returned at the end of 2005, this time with an even bigger challenge: to construct the installations of the gigantic outdoor coal mine for the company Vale in Moatize, in the Province of Tete, in the country’s Northwest.
Odebrecht was also responsible for building the project’s entire infrastructure. Roads and civil construction work is included, in addition to a charcoal processing plant.
The mine will produce coke coal, used in the steelmaking industry, and energy coal, for use in thermoelectric power plants. The contract also includes the recovery of the railroads near the mine, the expansion of the Beira port and the construction of a new thermoelectric power plant.
In 2011, Odebrecht International received a new mission: to transform the Nacala Air Base into an International Airport. The contract includes the construction of a control tower and passenger and cargo terminals, in addition to the repaving of the landing strip, which will have a length of 3,400 meters.
Ação Social
Odebrecht International has worked to be more than just an important player in Mozambique’s economic expansion. In addition to participating in infrastructure projects and promoting the growth of other national sectors – such as energy and agriculture – the company also undertakes a series of social actions in the areas surrounding its construction projects.
One of these is focused on digital inclusion, a pressing demand in the country, in which only 1.56% of the population has Internet access. Through the program Hit the Net – originally geared toward Odebrecht workers in Brazil – Odebrecht International promotes the digital literacy of youth from the cities of Moatize, Tete and Cateme, as well as for Members at the Moatize Mine construction site.
The Moatize Consortium, which is undertaking this development, also supports the rational use of natural resources through environmental education actions. These initiatives include promoting the planting of seedlings by Members, as well as recycling programs, waste management and the capture and release of wildlife.
Some of these employees also participate in the “Doing Good” Volunteer Program, responsible for donating food and toys to orphanages, as well as books to the library at the Tete Superior Polytechnic Institute.
To support the qualification and insertion of local labor, Odebrecht International is implementing the Acreditar (“Believe”) Program in the country. The continued professional education initiative – which also takes place in Brazil – will operate in the municipality of Nacala, where the company is building the Civil International Airport.
Joining forces to combat AIDS – Mozambique is among the 10 nations most affected by the disease worldwide –, the company is also part of the “We Are Together” Program, lead by the Vale Foundation. It also holds awareness raising actions (such as lectures and plays) for over 3,000 Members, addressing themes such as hearing health, hypertension and ergonomics.
