Odebrecht’s History in the Country:

Eighteen years ago, Construtora Norberto Odebrecht arrived to Mexico in 1992. The Company's first achievement was the construction of a dam and hydroelectric power plant in the Huites region. The construction work, which took place at the highest point of the Fuerte River, allowed for the control of flooding and the improved use of the lands, with the construction of irrigation channels. It also allowed for the production of electricity and development of activities such as fishing and tourism.

After Los Huites, there were the substations and energy transmission lines in five states of the North. The company also constructed six offshore housing rigs with 1,000 beds to house the workers of the company Petroleos Mexicanos (Pemex).

More recently, Odebrecht Engenharia Industrial was bestowed with expanding and modernizing the General Lázaro Cárdenas del Río Refinery, also for Pemex. The idea is to increase the refining capacity and make the country – which is an oil exporter, but imports gasoline and diesel – self-sufficient in the production of fuels over upcoming years.

Since 2007, the company has also been responsible for the Michoacán Hydro-Agricultural Project, contracted by the State Government to resolve the water scarcity in the region. The development includes the construction of a dam measuring 89 m high and 372 m long and more than 46 km of irrigation channels. This will give the more than 2,000 families distributed along the 25,000-hectare area regular access to water.
