Odebrecht’s History in the Country:
Construtora Norberto Odebrecht began operating in the country in 1992. Over the two following years, it was responsible for the British Petroleum Oil Pumping Stations, and from 1994 to 1995, it led the Drummond Carbon Port project.
In 1993, the company won the bidding process to construct the La Loma-Santa Marta Railroad. The project involved the reconstruction of 223 kilometers of the national railroad network, including the design, manufacturing, assembly and start-up of the entire superstructure. The project also included sign and control communication systems, as well as the replacement of all the existing storm drains and restoration of the landfills. The work was completed in 1999.
In 1997, the company assumed the Termoemcali Thermoelectric Power Plant project. During the same year, it was also responsible for the Transmethane Gas Pipeline and the Cañaveralejo and Salitre Wastewater Treatment Plants.
The Cañaveralejo Wastewater Treatment Plant project in Cali was completed in 2002. Odebrecht’s work involved the construction, supply and assembly of equipment, as well as the tests and operation of the plant. The project also involved the construction of administrative and service buildings.
Still in 1997, the company assumed the Miel I Hydroelectric Power Plant in Caldas. Constructed with roller-compacted concrete, Miel I is the highest dam in the world of its type. Its dam is 192 meters high and 354 meters long. With three turbines, the plant has the power to generate 375 MW of energy. The construction work was completed in 2002.
The year 2009 marked the Organization’s return to Colombia when it won yet another contract, this time for the construction of the Tunjuelo-Canoas Interceptor. Under the leadership of Odebrecht América Latina e Angola, the project consists of the creation of 11 kilometers of tunnels that will transport part of the sewage collected in the city of Bogotá to the future Canoas Treatment Plant.
During this same year, Odebrecht worked in association with local companies to win the bidding for the construction of 530 km of Rota do Sol, the highway that will connect Bogotá to the Caribbean coast, traversing eight states and 39 Colombian municipalities. Rota do Sol is considered Colombia’s most important infrastructure project over recent years.
