Odebrecht’s History in the Country:
In 1984, Construtora Norberto Odebrecht signed its first contract in Angola to construct the Capanda Hydroelectric Power Plant. The development, constructed 400 kilometers from the capital Luanda and with the capacity to generate 520 MW, represented a milestone for the development of the Angolan economy.
Currently, with over 25 contracts underway in the country and more than 16,000 workers, Odebrecht Angola operates in the segments of infrastructure, real estate, bioenergy, mining, agribusiness, energy and special projects, with the following highlights:
Infrastructure
The Waters of Luanda and Waters of Benguela projects are among the most important developments to be completed by Odebrecht Angola in the infrastructure sector. Initiated in 1998 and 2004, respectively, the two together benefit more than 4.4 million people by expanding the treated water distribution network in the cities of Luanda, Benguela, Lobito, Catumbela and Baía Farta.
The South Luanda Urban Development Project began in 1994. Under the country’s first public-private initiative, 225 km of electric network and 64 km of road systems were installed, in addition to drainage, sewage, water supply and public lighting networks.
In 2002, Odebrecht was contracted by the Angolan government to build 4,000 housing units as part of the Population Resettlement Program. It recently expanded the contract to include an additional 3,000 homes and infrastructure for another 20,000. It is currently responsible for the Catumbela International Airport construction work in the province of Benguela.
Real Estate
In 1998, Odebrecht became a pioneer in the construction of high-level residential condominiums in the country when it began the work for the South Atlantic Condominium. Since then, over 1,000 units have been delivered. The Riviera, Morada dos Reis, Belas Business Park and Noblesse Residence condominiums, as well as Belas Shopping, are examples of the company’s activities in the real estate sector.
Bioenergy
Odebrecht Angola invests in the area of Bioenergy through the company Biocom. Starting in 2012, this company – which includes shareholders such as Sonangol and Damer Group – will produce sugar to supply the domestic market through the Cacuso Agro-Industrial Unit, located in the province of Malanje. The plant will have the capacity to produce 260,000 tons of sugar and will insert some 45 MW of power into the region’s electrical system during the six months of harvest.
Mining
Odebrecht began its activities in the mining sector in 1991 as a service provider at the Luzamba Project. In 1993, it joined the Catoca Mining Company, focused on the production, prospecting, exploration, recovery and sale of diamonds. Odebrecht also worked in the area of alluvium diamond production through the Angola Mining Development Company (SDM), created in 1999, in association with the company Endiama.
Agribusiness
Odebrecht participated in the agroindustrial project undertaken by the Angolan government through the public company Gesterra S/A at the Pungo Andongo Farm in the province of Malanje. With a planting area of 4,500 hectares, the site is strategic reserve for the government when it comes to combating hunger and poverty. Odebrecht worked on this project as the manager of the agroindustrial production and operated the cornmeal and animal feed factories. Aiming to ensure the development’s self-sustainability, the company trained people and transferred the Brazilian technology for the farm’s operational management, currently entirely performed by Angolans.
Energy
In 2007, the consortium formed by Odebrecht, Alstom, Elecnor and Lyon began the Gove Dam repair work in Huambo. During that same year, Odebrecht assumed the Cambambe Hydroelectric Power Plant rehabilitation and modernization project in the province of North Kwanza. The company also installs transmission lines that carry energy to different cities in the country. It delivered the Capanda-Lucala-Viana line in 2009, guaranteeing the improved stability of the electric energy supply for Luanda.
Special Projects
In 2007, Odebrecht initiated the Luanda Expressways Revitalization Project, which includes the services of construction maintenance, urban cleaning and support to improve the traffic of 10 of the city's highway axes. The company is also responsible for managing the Angolan government food distribution network, Nosso Super, inaugurated during the same year. In this partnership, Odebrecht is in charge of organizing the supply logistics for 29 stores and two distribution centers in the country’s 18 provinces.
Ação Social
Aligned with the Organization’s Sustainability Policy, one of Odebrecht Angola’s principles is to conduct its business with the permanent quest to improve the quality of life of the Angolan population. Through its contracts, it contributes to the development of the communities located near its construction projects, with synergetic and integrated actions.
The company invests its own resources in a voluntary fashion in initiatives focused on education, health, environmental preservation, the expansion of opportunities that generate income and the recovery and promotion of culture.
In 2002, Odebrecht Angola was internationally recognized for its Program to Fight AIDS, which works under the motto of prevention through education and received an investment of US$ 1 million.
Since then, it has worked to train educating agents, which include both company Members and people from different Angolan communities, expanding the results of this action in both scale and scope.
Other programs such as Women’s Health, Safe Blood and Malaria Prevention Agent Training, as well as projects focused on food security, represent the company’s efforts when it comes to promoting Angolans’ health, reducing the population’s level of vulnerability.
Odebrecht Angola also works to increase income generating opportunities through entrepreneurialism, generating economy of scale and job opportunities for the urban and rural communities. The program “Kulonga pala Kukula” is a good example of this. Implemented in the region of Capanda, in the province of Malanje, it increased the income of the families benefited by the produce production chain by 80%.
The company also contributes toward human and social development through education and the personal and professional training of Angolans, constantly increasing the opportunities for growth, both inside and outside the company. In Benguela, the Acreditar (“Believe”) Program has already trained 600 people.
