Infrastructure projects are crucial for the development of countries and impact several other economic sectors. To develop its strategy for this segment, Odebrecht created the Brazil Infrastructure Vice Presidency within Construtora Norberto Odebrecht (CNO). The strengthening of its operations led to the dismemberment of the area into a separate company in 2009 called Odebrecht Infraestrutura.

It has undertaken several important projects throughout its history, such as the construction of subways, highways, ports and airports. Some examples are the projects undertaken along different stretches of the São Paulo Subway.

Odebrecht also expanded the production capacity of the Carajás Mine in Pará, and built a new terminal at the Guararapes International Airport in Recife.

Odebrecht Infraestrutura is also contributing toward the holding of the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. The company is responsible for the remodeling and construction of the following sports arenas:

  • Maracanã in Rio de Janeiro
  • Fonte Nova Arena in Salvador
  • Capibaribe Arena, currently being erected in São Lourenço da Mata, a city neighboring Recife
  • Corinthians Stadium in São Paulo

The World Cup will leave important legacies for the country, as will the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. The modernization of the current structure and creation of intelligent transportation systems will be crucial to the success of this mega-event, which promises to provide a new paradigm of commuting for local citizens.

For example, the city will receive the Transoeste Corridor, an expressway with Bus Rapid Transit (BRTs) stations – exclusive lanes for the faster circulation of buses. One of the most critical stretches of the construction work, the opening of the Grota Funda tunnel, will be completed by Odebrecht Infraestrutura.

The contribution is significant considering the challenge: in Grande Rio alone, there are over 19 million trips per day using a range of different means of transportation, representing 75% of the volume of passengers from the entire state.

Intended to encourage the potential growth of Brazil’s Transport and Logistics segment in a unique fashion, the Organization launched Odebrecht TransPort (OTP) in March 2010. Through OTP, Odebrecht Infraestrutura is able to develop the new business offered within the public sphere. The goal is to make it one of Brazil’s main providers of infrastructure for transport and logistics.

The dimension of Odebrecht’s operations in the infrastructure sector is proven in numbers. The Organization’s portfolio includes the construction of:

  • 11,334 km of highways
  • 1,885 km of railroads
  • 182 km of bridges and viaducts
  • 146.5 km of subway lines
  • 46 ports
  • 38 airports
